Red Wine
Red wine is one of the most popular alcoholic drinks ever drunken. Moderate wine drinking, mostly linked to red varieties, can actually lower the risk for heart problems. Moderate wine drinkers exercise more, are more likely to be healthier, they are more aware of their health and are often of a higher socioeconomic class, which may be the real reason wine is considered to be healthy.
For heart disease affects, red wine follows a “J” curve. Heavy drinkers pose a high risk to themselves, but so do non drinkers. Moderate drinkers actually lower their risk of heart disease by having one or two drinks a day. The reason could be the chemical ‘resveratrol’, which is produced by a fungus that grows on grape skins during fermentation. Since white wines remove the skins, they have very low levels of resveratrol.
Red wine has plenty of resversatrol which has been linked to lengthening lifespan and giving the heart added protection. It also has the effect of lower the amount of calories that a person consumes by up to 30%. Caloric restriction also has links to longer lifespan. Other beneficial chemicals in red wines are flavinoids, polyphenals, and anti-oxidants.
